Sitting a lot isn't good for you. Studies have found that people who sit a lot everyday have a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease and early death. But standing all day might sound tiring right? All my answer to all you lazy people is that most modern ‘standing desks’ are adjustable to let you choose to either sit or stand. Here are seven reasons you should deck your home office out with an adjustable standing desk (or work office - just send this blog to your boss to get them on board)
That's right! You can lower your risk of weight gain and obesity simply by standing. This difference in calorie burn could be one of the reasons that sitting longer is so strongly linked to obesity and metabolic disease according to studies.
Generally speaking, the more your blood sugar levels rise after a meal, the worse it is for your health.
In a small study of 10 office workers, standing for 180 minutes after lunch reduced the blood sugar spike by 43% compared to sitting for the same amount of time
Some of your back pain may even be caused by how you sit.
One study found that a sit-stand desk reduces upper back and neck pain by up to 54% just after 4 weeks.
Another study found lower back pain was reduced by up to 34%
No need to call in your masseuse every week… Maybe every couple of weeks because they feel really good anyway
Sick of being a tired, grouchy, slouch at work? A stand up desk might be your magic cure!
In a seven week study, participants who used a standup desks reported feeling less stressed and fatigued than the participants who remained seated all day.
And with the improvement in mood and energy levels comes the next benefit:
So, you’ve got a standup desk. You are full of energy and in a great mood; It’s now time to get some quality work done!
No one is more productive when they are tired. Good energy levels are essential for productive work. If you want to step it up a gear at work; get more sleep, eat cleaner foods and DON’T SIT DOWN ALL DAY
Who doesn’t want to live longer? If your answer to that is “me, I want to die young before my body gets old”, then you are probably the kind of person who wouldn’t be working at a
computer all day.
18 studies have found that those who sit the most have a 49% greater chance of dying early than those who sit the least.
This is probably not surprising given the link between sitting and type 2 diabetes/heart disease.
Now that you are convinced, it is time to go out and buy an adjustable standup desk. If you are reading this from Australia, check out Stand Up Desks Australia for the best range of adjustable standing desks!
